This is Eternal Life

December 13, 2010

This is eternal life- that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Chris, whom you sent.  ~John 17:3

Jesus reminds us what eternal life is and what it is not.  Eternal life is not endless existence, living forever.  It isn’t even living forever in a good and pleasing environment, such as heaven.  This is what many people think of when they think of eternal life through Jesus Christ: living forever in heaven.  This is not so.

Eternal life is knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ and knowing them well, knowing them intimately.  One cannot truly know God in the short span of time on earth.  We can only get acquainted.  To truly know a being so great and vast and deep as the Creator and Father takes more time, endless time.  It takes eternal life to get to know God.  Here and now we are restricted in our ability to know God because we have only so much life.  God grants us eternal life not so we can enjoy life forever in some ethereal reality, but so that we have all the time we’ll ever need to know God and know him well.

Right now we are restricted by time.  And we are restricted by time because of sin.

Adam could have lived forever.  Even as a fallen human being he had the potential to live forever.  If he kept on eating from the tree of life he would have endless life.  But because of his sin corrupted mind he would never know God.  That is why God cut him off:

And the LORD God said, “Now that the man has become one of us, knowing good and evil, he must not be allowed to stretch out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.  ~Genesis 3:22

Adam was cut off from eternal life.  Since he now was acquainted and stained with the knowledge of evil, he could never truly know God.  Eternal life had to be taken away lest man forever live apart from God.  Eternal life could only be restored once the sin problem which hindered man’s ability to know God was dealt with.  God sent Jesus.  Jesus dealt with Sin.  Jesus offers eternal life again.  Now we can know the one true God, being freed from the sin nature.  We have all eternity to know God and know him well.

I have known my wife for almost ten years.  I feel like I know her pretty well, but i have the rest of my life (who knows how long that is) to know her more and more.  I’m sure if you asked me 50 years from now whether or not i truly know my wife i would say, “Yes, but i’m learning knew things all the time.”  In a lifetime that is over in the blink of an eye we can scarcely say that we truly know even one significant person completely.  How much more time will it take to truly know the one true God, our Creator, Father, Savior, King and friend.  We need endless time, no restraints to truly know God.  That is eternal life.

Thank you Jesus.

By the way… we get the tree back in the end.

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.  ~Revelation 2:7

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.  ~Revelation 22:1-5

Amen.  Come, Lord Jesus.

Nice. Even though you told me about this in the car today, I enjoyed reading your thoughts after you had time to put it all together. I love the reference to Revelation at the end. God’s plan is so amazing and reading about it makes me feel complete. Thanks for sharing.
